The last time I saw a captive animal perform, I was a naive teenager.

As a more informed adult, I now avoid the reprehensible spectacle that are performances by enslaved animals. I find it unnecessarily cruel and oppressive. Some unscrupulous owners live of these animals and mistreat the very beings that help keep a roof over their heads and put food on their tables.

A world that values and cares for the animals that enrich our lives beyond measure looks like one where we take our obligation to protect their interests and welfare seriously. And so wouldn’t it be nice to do all that is within our power to ensure animals are treated kindly and humanely and to strive for a continuation of all species so that the magic of the animal kingdom is witnessed for generations to come.
