You guessed it! – I’ve been listening to Coldplay songs on repeat!…which is why this post followed so quickly on the heels of the last!
Unsurprisingly, I decided to delve deeper into another one of their mega hits which they composed for legendary country music artist Johnny Cash. The group had planned to record ‘Til kingdom come’ with Johnny Cash, but Johnny passed from ill health before this could happen.
‘Til kingdom come’, has a country, folklore feel about it and is on their X&Y album, their 3rd studio album, released in 2005.
Lead singer, Chris Martin said that the idea for the title came from George Bush’s speech to Tony Blair about the Iraq war – that the kingdom would come when the war ended. The song however appears to describe a deep seated love more than a political sentiment.
‘Til kingdom come’ tells of an enduring love and some say it is about a person who, nearing the end of their life, asks the one singular love of their life to let them into their life so that they can have the privilege and pleasure of spending their final days in the company of one who they have waited their entire life for.
It could also be a person asking God to forgive them, and help them achieve peace of mind and heart, prevent them from thinking unkind thoughts and speaking unkind words, so that they can be worthy of entering heaven when their days on earth are done.
So here goes my attempt to put my slant on what the lyrics are intending to communicate…
One, two
Still my heart and hold my tongue
A person it telling themselves to be calm in their heart and to speak kind words – ie to hold their emotions in check. Ironically, the speaker does anything but keep their emotions in check! Instead thoughts and emotions are expressed candidly.
I feel my time, my time has come
Let me in, unlock the door
I’ve never felt this way before
I believe that I am at the point in my life where I am ready to receive and be received. Unlock the door to your heart because I have never felt surer than I do now.
And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummer begins to drum
I don’t know which way I’m going
I don’t know which way I’ve come
The wheels of life keep turning, music is heralding my arrival even though I am unsure which direction I came from or which direction I am headed in.
Hold my head inside your hands
I need someone who understands
I need someone, someone who hears
For you, I’ve waited all these years
Let me rest my weary head in your hands, because I need the understanding of someone I trust and love implicitly, and who hears my innermost thoughts, and for whose embrace I have waited for all this time.
For you I’d wait ’til kingdom come
Until my day, my day is done
And say you’ll come and set me free
Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me
I will wait for you until the end of my time on earth, so please tell me, that you will wait for me too, and that you will come and rescue me from this prison where I am without you.
In your tears and in your blood
In your fire and in your flood
I hear you laugh, I heard you sing
I wouldn’t change a single thing
Through good times and bad, I hear you remaining positive and hopeful and it’s something I would not change at all.
And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummers begin to drum
I don’t know which way I’m going
I don’t know what I’ve become
The wheels of life keep turning, music is heralding my arrival even though I am unsure which direction I came from or which direction I am headed in.
For you, I’d wait ’til kingdom come
Until my days, my days are done
And say you’ll come and set me free
Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me
The wheels of life keep turning, music is heralding my arrival even though I am unsure which direction I came from or which direction I am headed in.
Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me
Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me
All I ask is that you promise to wait for me
Despite the conjecture surrounding the context within which this song describes the sentiment of love, there can be no doubt that it celebrates intense, unwavering deep-seated love whether it is the love one has for their partner, sibling, parent or for their higher power/God!
‘Til kingdom come’ is an Ode to love, that describes a patient, respectful and unfaltering love that transcends all barriers to be triumphant. How lucky would one be, to experience such a gift in one’s lifetime.
Coldplay fans pack out stadiums all over the world, they belt out genius lyrics and catchy melodies with a united goal of celebrating and promoting peace, love and harmony.
So Coldplay, in anticipation of seeing you perform later this year, as one of your newest fans, I echo the sentiment expressed in this song and say…
I feel my time, my time has come
Let me in, unlock the door
I’ve never felt this way before
